Ever since 1840, Paris has been continually reconsidering it urban structure.
The historical center of Paris has become more and more dense.It became necessary to move to 'the Grands Boulevards'.  The words themselves lead us to think of widened roads. No less that 22 meters wide, up to 30 meters at certain points, compared to the 15 meters maximum  that was commonplace in the 18th century.

This was obviously for economical and political reasons, for the new Paris... and for the birth ofthe 'Second Empire' and the 'pre-modernist era'.

In addition to the big banks and the great commercial outlets, it was also the entire cultural way of life of Paris that became exposed to theaters, 'grands cafés' and, later, cinémas. It was in this blossoming context of a "new Paris" that the "Duvelleroy" business set up on the Grands boulevards, a business that became one of the greatest Parisian fan makers throughout the 'Belle Epoque'
